Tourney Post-Mortem

Big thanks and Congratulations to all the teams and volunteers for making the 2nd Annual a big success. All in all, the tourney went smoothly with very few problems.

It took a lot of work to pull this one off this year. We owe a big thanks to league president Bill Menter (who, if he had hair, would have completely lost it) and 5th Ward Councilor Ron Casadei for helping navigate City Hall the two weeks leading up to the tournament.

If any of you knew what it took to get this one off the ground this year you would understand some of the slight mistakes that may have been made. A lot of our resources were being redirected just to play ball.

That said, Congrats to this year's winner Palisades/PBA, and runners-up Galliano Club and Pozzie's!

This year's co-MVPs were Dave Guy, pitcher for Galliano and Rick 'The Living Legend' Kenealy for Palisades.

Thanks also to our tireless board and all the volunteer umps both ASA guys (Bobo, Butch and Tim) and non-umps (Matt Crye, Jeff Lanigan, and our board members). Couldn't have made it through the weekend without you guys.

Another big thank you to our scorekeepers for the weekend, 'Flasci' Joe Nasci and Bob 'the silver fox' Miller. Thanks for helping out fellas!

Also, big thanks to this year's vendors, the crew from the Rhine Haus and Dean's Concessions. If you didn't get one of their roast beef sandwiches this weekend, you missed out. Hopefully, most of you guys spent at least a few bucks at their tables to make their efforts worthwhile.

And finally, this tournament couldn't have happened without the guys from the city Parks & Rec. Dept. (most of whom played on the Galliano squad this weekend.) Thanks to Jim Guy, Lloyd Drake & their crew for setting up the fence, getting the grass mowed and providing the tractor. Also thanks to the softball workers Jim McQuinn & Josh Seaton.

As always, anytime we try something, it's a learning experience for us. Every year we get a little better at it and any comments or suggestions will help us all the more.

Time to start planning for #3 next year!

Jim Korpela "A Tribute to One of Rome's Living Sports Legends"
Rome Observer
Posted:
May 29, 2008

As Jim and I are both toping the 50 mark this year, (I'm cresting the hill a scant six days before Jimmy), we talked a little about personal accomplishments and how they can affect you differently. Last year, Jim dropped a hole-in-one while playing with friends at Celebration Golf Course down in Florida; on hole number "5," no less.

RMSA Sets New Deadline on the Payment for Increased Team Sponsorship Fees

The City of Rome Recreation Department (Rec. Dept.) has mandated that the Rome Men’s Softball Association secure a formal Insurance Policy for the 2008 season. In order to keep our team sponsorship fees set at the original cost of $375 per team, the Rec. Dept. was/currently is in the process of working with our Association towards allocating city funds to cover and/or off set this financial burden placed on our league.

As of today, Thursday, May 29, 2008, an agreement or settlement has not been met or reached. To ensure that our league can continue to play out the remainder of the 2008 season, the RMSA Board has no other option but to secure these funds through our Association, thus increasing each team’s sponsorship to $425 per team for the 2008 season. Until the Rec. Dept. allocates these necessary funds to our Association, the Board must set forth and enforce the following policy:

  • All teams are required to deposit an additional $50 into to the league by Thursday, June 19th at 3 pm.
  • The money received will be held in trust by the Board for an unspecified period of time until our Association and the Rec. Dept. can reach an official agreement regarding their insurance requirement issues.

ALL TEAMS WILL BE FULLY REIMBURSED IF THE FOLLOWING EVENTS TAKE PLACE:

  • The Rec. Dept. allocates the necessary funding to cover our Association’s cost of Insurance for the 2008 season or the Rec. Dept. decides to place the cost of insurance onto our Association after we reach and pass the midway point of the season (after week 6).
  • The RMSA Board WILL NOT buy insurance for the 2008 season, set forth by the Rec. Dept. that late into our season. Thus, each team will be reimbursed IN FULL their additional $50 fee they deposited into the league.

If anyone has any questions or concerns about the $50 increase in team sponsorship fees, please contact Bill Menter, RMSA President at (315) 219-3240.

Memo to All Team Captains

We’ve had a great first week!  Keep up the great work!  With all the many changes we have instituted since last season, it’s nice to see the compliance we’ve received thus far.  That said, we have encountered some issues that need to be addressed as quickly as possible to keep this league moving in the right direction.
